We have a lot of people using a lot of wildly different settings for ventrilo. By normalizing settings, people won't be too loud or too low.

Here's how:

- Go to Setup

- Enable Direct Sound

- Select the SFX Button

- Select Compressor and click Add.

- Under Compressor Properties use the following settings

- Gain = 15

- Attack = 0.01

- Release = Around 500

- Threshold = Around -30

- Ratio = 100

- Pre delay = 4.0

Next, add Volume to the left box in the SFX menu. In its Properties you will find your volume control. You can adjust this to your liking, it will not affect output.

If everybody implements this there will be less volume issues with vent.

Other than this there are of course a few handy tips for general microphone usage:

- Your mic should be as close to your mouth as possible.

- Disable the beep sound vent makes when you push your push-to-talk key. Very often it somehow gets into the vent stream and provides annoyance. Trust your ventrilo - it will record if the button is held down. No need for it to tell you every time. To disable, uncheck "Play key clicks" in Setup.

- Use a headset, so you can turn off your normal speakers. If you have a desk mic, you suck and should buy a headset immediately. (Or just turn off all sound except ventrilo) They're not that expensive. This is to prevent echo as your desk mic well record sound from your speakers and send it to vent with disastrous results.

- Do not fiddle with the inbound and outbound amplifiers in ventrilo, unless you are chronically too silent or loud (in which case an optimal solution would be a new, better mic) even with the vent settings outlined above. The amplification these sliders give is, in a technical term, shit, and will produce bad sound.
